FAQs

Who can apply for the Nomad Residence Permit?

The permit is available to non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who work remotely for an overseas employer, run a business registered outside Malta, or offer freelance services to clients abroad. Applicants must meet the minimum income and documentation requirements.

Can I bring my family with me under the same permit?

Yes. The main applicant can include dependents, such as a spouse or long-term partner, minor children, and adult dependents who are financially or medically reliant. Each family member must submit supporting documents and pay the applicable fees.

Do I need a job offer from a Maltese company to apply?

No. In fact, you cannot work for a Maltese company under this permit. Your income must come entirely from foreign employment or business activities based outside Malta.

Is the Nomad Residence Permit renewable?

Yes. The permit is initially valid for 12 months and can be renewed annually, up to a total stay of four years, provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria and maintain a minimum physical presence in Malta.

How long does the application process take?

Processing typically takes between 30 to 60 days after all required documents are submitted and the application fee is paid. Delays may occur if further checks or clarifications are needed.

Will I have to pay taxes in Malta?

Remote income earned from outside Malta is tax-exempt for the first 12 months. After that, a flat 10% tax rate may apply to income declared under the Nomad Residence Permit. Any income sourced from within Malta is taxed at standard rates.

Can I travel in the EU with this permit?

Yes. The Nomad Residence Permit allows for visa-free travel within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. However, it does not grant residency rights in other EU countries.
